Black Hair Salon Pen and Ink Series
Black Hair Salon Pen and Ink Series – This series of pen & drawings came about when I was given an opportunity to show my work at Vongeefly’s Fashion For A Cause Charity Event on August 22, 2015 at the Pig Iron Theater For The Performing Arts. The event featured a fashion show accompanied by simultaneous musical performances. Most of my artwork at the time wouldn’t have been appropriate for this show so I created a series of pen & ink drawings that would appeal to an urban, fashion minded audience. Hence, the Black Hair Salon Pen and Ink Series was born.
For this series, my aim is to draw each ink drawing showing a hairstylist working on a client’s hair, creating a different or unique hairstyle. Because of the nature of black hair and black hairstyling, with all of the twists, braids, curls and straights, it lends itself very well to the pen and ink medium. My blog posts document step by step how each piece of artwork was created from pencil thumbnail sketch to completed ink drawing. For the most part, these drawings were drawn by hand using crow quill pen: Koh-i-Noor nib holder and Hunt 22B nib. Additional information such as paper stock, type of pencils, erasers, type of ink and rapidographs are all included in the blog posts. To purchase the original, please send me a message through my Contact page.
